Mother broke her hip and is on her first day at rehab. The doctor told me that she may not be able to come home. I'm in the process of checking out facilities in my area for her. I'm a little confused and overwhelmed as to what questions I should ask them. She just turned 73 has COPD and broke her hip.

Hi Wilma,
You've come to the right place, and I'm certain the caregivers here will have great advice for you. Additionally, AgingCare has this article that might help

Wilma, just curious why your Mom's doctor said that she "may" not be able to go back to her home? Does he think she wouldn't progress with rehab to help her walk after breaking her hip? Or does her home have a lot of stairs? Could Mom afford to have caregivers come in to help her? It would be self-pay unless family can help out with a shift or two.

If Mom cannot go home there are usually two choices of care.... if Mom's hip heals to a point where she can do some walking using a walker, then she might be able to go into Assisted Living. Most Assisted Living facilities are self-pay, and with your Mom being only 73, she could live well into her 80's or 90's depending on her COPD. Today's Assisted Living are more like living in a hotel.

If Mom cannot budget for Assisted Living, her next step would be to apply and be accepted by Medicaid [which is different from Medicare], which would pay for all of her room, board, and care at a nursing home. She wouldn't have her own room, she would need to share the room with a room-mate. Try to pick out one that has a good feel about it, and looks comfortable.

Let's all hope Mom can get stronger and better with Rehab, and be able to go home :)

Oh, what to ask.  If Mom will be self-pay, ask what all is included in the cost.  And if there are any optional levels of care for later down the road.
