This fellow is physically in great shape, strong and healthy, been an athlete all his life, approaching 80 years of age, and was employed in a very competitive job until this past March. How can I keep him occupied all day long as he sits and stares out the window???

Dad is competent enough that he knows it won't get better. Maybe he wants to spare his family the sadness of seeing him decline.

I'd ask his doctor about medication. It sounds like he's really down. If his mood improved, he might be more inclined to participate in activities like Babalou describes above.

I know that at one time, my dad, who is in his 70's and active, went to Silver Sneakers. He enjoyed it and it was a way to keep active and socialize with others his age. You could go with him and join in or wait for him.

Have antidepressants been considered or recommended by a geriatric psychiatrist? Have you spoken to his doctor about these remarks? I think they should be taken seriously.

Is there a reason that he can't play sports? Bowling, golf, basketball all come to mind.
