I would just like to state, in the rural area where I live, medical transportation is pretty much non-existent. I have tried searching for years through VA, Medicare, private agencies. I thought it was just me, but one of my caregivers was trying to find transportation to get her mother to medical care in a town 90 miles from our area, and eventually is having to purchase a van with wheelchair lift to transport her. I can't even find medical transportation to take my spouse to the local long term care facility for respite care - I have to get him there - which is impossible since he is bed bound for the most part. I am told by our local area on aging office they have little or no transportation due to funding cuts. I hope in the future there is better transportation.

Also contact the local hospital. They may have GMT (General Medical Transportation) vans for patients.

Talk to medicare or the Medicare advantage plan that you or the person that you care for has. Both of them usually provide medical transportation. Also ask the primary care provider as they are usually affiliated with a medical group that has medical transport provided. You just have to ask them about it.

If your loved one has cancer, the American Cancer Society has a program called Ride to Recovery. Volunteers take patients to and from medical treatment appointments, like radiation, chemotherapy and doctor's appointments.

Some communities have a Drive-a-Senior programs. The complexity of your loved one's medical issues may eliminate this as a possibility.

Our local bus system has a special program for rides for folks with disabilities. The person needs to qualify for this service. The bus accommodates wheelchairs.

Depending on where you live and the type of medical transportation you need you could check with local ambulance services. I used one for several years for a wheelchair bound partner and found it very efficient, but it can be expensive. At the time it was $40 per round trip, but the service was exceptional.

Ask around in your community about local cab services. There is an inexpensive one headquartered near where my mom lives.

Call your local Area Agency on Aging for your county.

We can't help you on this forum, we're just caregivers ourselves.
