My sister and her daughter state that the doctors don't want to provide us with information because of HIPAA. Can the doctor state that?

Have you niece get a release form from your mothers doctor, your mother signs it and the POA can get the information.

Your profile says Mom has Dementia. She assigned your niece as POA for a reason which is now in effect. As POA the doctors only talk to her. If you are not on Moms Hippa paperwork they cannot talk to you. And as her grandmothers representative she does not need to tell anyone Grandmoms info.

The Niece has POA. That is who the doctor will speak to.
If your mother is awake and competent she can give the doctor permission to speak to you also.
But the doctor will more than likely be speaking to ONE person and that will be the person with the POA. They do not have time to speak to every person.

Why is the niece not speaking to you regarding your mother's condition, may I ask?
Sabrina, please limit yourself to one question for one subject.

Unless your mother has given permission, her medical information is private.

This is exactly why no one should do any caregiving for someone unless they have POA.

IF a POA wants to keep everything secretive just let them handle it all themselves and offer no help
