It's not FREE. Your mother's care is being paid by the taxpayers. Medicaid may very well place a lien on the house which if sold will be paid from the proceeds.
I agree with Geaton, talk to Moms Medicaid case worker or see a Medicaid planner.
Yes, Mom has no out of pocket but she does have a house. I would wonder how a reversed mortgage could be dismissed and Mom being allowed a life estate concerning the house.
Anytime you receive any type of Medicaid and house is involved, upon the death of the recipient a lien will be placed on the house. That lien will need to be satisfied by selling that house or someone pays the lien off. The only way to get around this is someone has to be living with the recipient at the time recipient starts receiving Medicaid. Can be a spouse, caregiver of at least 2 yrs or a disabled child. All may need to prove they can maintain the house. Because, when any of them pass or leave the house the lien will need to be satisfied.
I am not sure if a life estate can be done once a person is receiving Medicaid for their care? Don't know all about how Reversed Mortages work. Did the RM set up a life estate so they receive the house at time of Moms death thats how the RM got dismissed? And how does this work when Medicaid is involved. And if this was all set up just before Mom started receiving Medicaid for her care, was it legal because there is 5 yr look back.
Your sister maybe a banker but she probably knows nothing about how Medicaid works. Its rules are very complicated.
UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS We know the CDPAP program better than anyone. We’ll process your application as efficiently as humanly possible, doing everything we can to qualify you for the benefits you deserve. There’s no need to waste time getting stuck in red tape when we can take charge of your application from start to finish.
APPLY FOR CDPAP In order to participate in CDPAP, you need to meet requirements including a Physician’s Order for Services. Don’t worry if any of this sounds confusing. We’ll take the reins and ensure that you meet all of the State’s social and nursing assessments.
SELECT A PERSONAL ASSISTANT Once we’ve helped you get approved for CDPAP, you’ll have nearly absolute freedom to choose a personal assistant of your choosing. Even better, the individual you hire does not need any work experience or licensing in order to start getting compensated.
RECEIVE CARE Personal assistants get compensated weekly as soon as they begin working. Payments can be sent via direct deposit or a check mailed to your home. We’ll be in touch on a regular basis to ensure that the caregiving arrangement is working out smoothly as envisioned.
And finally
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE MEDICAID? CDPAP is limited to Medicaid recipients. If you don’t have Medicaid, a Sunray representative will help you submit a Medicaid application speedily.
Does not seem to be what you are getting. Mom is suppose to pick her Caregiver. And I don't think any Medicaid in home care will give u aides 24/7.
this does outline some of the facts about the program but it is also advertising for an agency called Sunray - many private companies offer to 'help' with Medicaid applications to make it easier to access benefits...but they do not give away their services. And they may or may not be good at what they do. The local Area onAging or Council on Aging office or county/state division of elder services probably provide unbiased information.
What Medicaid does or doesn’t do as far as recovery or recoup aka a payback after the Medicaid recipient dies is dependent on the program.
Is CDPAP is an inhome community based Medicaid program? So it’s an IHHS program that has paid by the State caregivers and their # of hours dependent on your moms needs assessment? Is your mom actually doing a copay to the State or an caregiver agency? So mom is required to do a % of her income to be on CDPAP? and At what age did you mom go onto it? and was she at all on Medicaid for health insurance prior? This is a different Medicaid program than one that covers inhome care or NH care.
what exactly do you mean by the reverse mortgage being “dismissed”? What was legally done to status of RM your mom did on her home? and Your mom (& you) currently live there, right?
The best thing you could do is educate yourself on Medicaid quals and terms. Others may feel they know, but you should rely on the Medicaid site for accurate information.
Is there some reason why you weren't involved with the Medicaid quals process?
