My mom is at the stage where the Lactulose isn't working, she is retaining fluid and hallucinating, talking about dead people like their alive. What's next?
Your Mom is end stage and should now be in Hospice so that you can insure that there IS no pain that cannot be relieved, even if the administration of medications hasten her death by some minutes, hours, or even days. There is no reason any longer for her to suffer. Yes, the pain can be severe due to the abdominal swelling alone. Please see to it that your Mom has all the relief available to her. I am so very sorry.
I sure hope you have brought hospice in by now. They will try their best to keep your mom pain free, and will be there to support you as well. You can ask them to give mom a Relistor injection to get her bowels moving. Towards the end of my husbands life, he wasn't able to poop for quite some time, but after getting the Relistor injection, he was pooping in about 20 minutes, and it cleaned him right out. My husband too, talked to a lot of different people that I couldn't see, about 2 1/2 weeks before he actually died. That is very normal when someone is getting to leave this world for the next. Please, if you don't have hospice involved yet, call them first thing in the morning. Praying for God's peace and comfort to be with you in the days ahead.
What's next is you should ask for a hospice evaluation for your mother asap. Cirrhosis of the liver is not a pleasant thing to pass from, but if you involve hospice, they will ensure your mom is not in pain and will not suffer at all as she takes the final steps of her journey. Consult with her doctor right away.
Hospice was a Godsend for me when my father was dying of an inoperable brain tumor. They kept him comfortable and relaxed the entire time, and provided us (the family) with counseling and help every step of the way. Wishing you the best of luck at this difficult time.
