I get assistance but I my SS is not enough to pay my bills. So I must drop my supplement. Will Obama care pay my health bills if I drop my supplement??
There is no such thing as "Obamacare". It is the Affordable Care Act. Anyone who already has insurance through work, an organization, private pay insurance, Medicare and Medicaid will not change what they have. Those who are uninsured due to being priced out of insurance, being unemployed, being self-employed, or having pre-existing conditions that makes them uninsurable will be able to buy an affordable insurance policy through the state exchanges. Each state will set up an exchange and if they fail to do so, the federal government will set up an exchange for that state.
The exchanges will offer policies from regular insurance companies like Humana, Blue Cross, Aetna, etc. They will be affordable to most. For those who make $80,000 and under, they can apply for a tax credit on a special form. This will not go in with your regular tax forms. On a sliding scale basis depending on your income and number of people in the family, the credit will cover the cost of the insurance policy either in part or in full. When you are approved, the federal government will send a check for the amount of your credit directly to your insurance company on your behalf.
This will likely be available also to seniors on Medicare who have to pay for either Part A or B or both and for supplements needed. Go to www.healthcare.gov (www.healthcaredotgov) where they have the details on a website the government has set up to help people prepare. You can get more information and details there. In the meantime, do not stop your supplement if you can help it. Signing up for Affordable Health Care benefits will begin in October of this year. Check out the website to get more info.
Medicare Supplement Plans ("medi-gap") and Medicare Advantage Plans are 2 different things. Medicare Advantage is an HMO, and although you have co-pays to pay, the Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) is INCLUDED with a Medicare Advantage plan, and it is MUCH CHEAPER than the Medi-gap coverage. Open enrollment is now until December 7 - please don't delay in getting the information you need and DEFINITELY DO NOT JUST DROP your Supplement coverage! You aren't asking about the drug coverage from what I can see, but if you don't have a number of chronic medical conditions that require a team of doctors, a Medicare Advantage plan may be right for you. Whether you are on the HMO or Medi-gap coverages, you can still get Medicaid if your income is low enough. DON'T DELAY in getting information, as you have less than a month to switch plans!!
Try dialing 211 on your telephone and you will get your state's help line which will refer you to the proper agency or give you an answer to your question.
If you are on medicare perhaps you should look into whether you qualilfy for medicaid or for the Medicare drug program "extra help". to find info do an internet search for Extra Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs
Info on the preexisting condition insurance plans is available at pcip.gov
Do you mean Medicare? Medicare Part D covers prescription drug costs up to a certain point. Of course, there is a co-pay. It was a nice thing that was done for seniors during the Bush administration. The new change with the Obama administration just narrowed the "doughnut hole" or gap, so that seniors who use many expensive medications don't have to pay out-of-pocket for as long.
