My dad has Alzheimer and is suffering from dropping jaw; consequently, he is breathing through his mouth and it becomes very dry. We constantly drop water in to keep it from drying up. Any accessory to keep his mouth closed at all times?

medeirosjose, is your father in the final stage of dementia? Having the mouth opened is very common. Sips of fluids and moisturizing the lips can help to keep him comfortable. If he is in an earlier stage, a brace fitted to his neck may help. I would be concerned that the brace may create more problems than it solves. Please let us know if you find anything that helps.

There is a type of chin strap one can wear to lift the jaw, but it is usually worn at night to keep the mouth closed to prevent snoring. What does his doctor say? If he can keep a lozenge in his mouth, ACT mouthwash has a new lozenge for "dry mouth" you can try (Walmart), as well as sponge swabs that are used in nursing homes. I am not sure where to buy them, but check out Walgreens in their home health care section. Best wishes!

It's really hard to watch when someone we love body's malfunction, sometimes I think it bothers us more than it bothers them. My mom had problems with her chin too, but it never completely dropped. He's lucky to have you searching for answers, I hope you find them! Check with specialists thru phone calls, advice is somewhat free over the phone and it can be more helpful than using the Internet sometimes.

You might want to speak with an occupational therapist, they may have some suggestions.

There are better options than just water. Moisturizing sprays like Biotene, Oasis or Act are at any drugstore. Also look at the chin straps used with CPAP machines or to prevent snoring. Hope it helps.
