He was in ICU w/Sepsis for a month. Now he has been in rehab for almost a month. Before hospitalization he was independent and living in his home. We were told he has about 20 days left where insurance will cover him. I can’t imagine him being on his own in 20 days! I have no idea how this works. What happens when his time is up at rehab and he is still not walking or able to get in and out of a wheelchair on his own?

Find Care & Housing
My husband came out of rehab bedridden after three months there. I’m not blaming the rehab because it is what it is. Hubby has me at home to care for him, but it sounds like your FIL has no one.

If there is no one to take care of your FIL, you will have to speak frankly with his discharge planner and/or the social services department at the rehab NOW. If he cannot self-pay, apply for Medicaid. NOW. If there is an SNF attached to the rehab as there was in my husband’s case, he may be able to go there Medicaid pending.

Don’t wait for the rehab to bring this up, you do it so you ha e all your ducks in a row when his coverage there ends. Be very clear with them that he cannot come to live with you. They will try to convince you to take him in.

He will need to use his income/savings for Assisted Living or Nursing Care. If he is indigent, he will qualify for Medicaid (not Medicare). Talk to the social worker at his Rehab facility.

Absolutely call a family meeting, or you could wind up with a boarder. Plant your foot wherever it needs to be planted on Hubby and tell him this cannot be left until the last minute. If Dad does make a wonderful recovery, you won’t be out anything. But all will be in place if he needs it.

We could not care for him. We both work full time. He is a large man, over 6ft tall and 250lbs.

Think you need a family meeting. Talk to the Therapist at rehab. Ask her if she/he thinks 20days could make a difference. To be honest, if he plateaus and shows no sign of improving before the 20 days Medicare will not pay for his care. He will be discharged. All the siblings will need to make a decision about his care now. Don't wait till the last minute, it makes it hard on everyone involved.

Someone might try to get you and your husband to allow him to move in with you. Is this what you want?

My FIL does have his wife but she is showing signs of Alzheimer’s. My husband and his family are not the most assertive people and seem to think he will be all back to normal in 20 days and not making any plan B’s or pursue any answers from rehab.
