Last year I paid $21 K to nursing home, 19K for funeral expenses (but it covered mine as well), paid all his credit card bills (10K), repaired his truck at his request, put almost 4K into fencing (dementia and wanders), porch repair (SW said we had to), new flooring for living and dining rooms (required again), bathroom flooring (required), clothes that fit due to weight changes, tv for nursing home as they don't provide, paid a water leak to the house that cost 2,500 and pipeline repair (650). Another hydrant repair (650) - he turned on something he shouldn't have and broke the hydrant (if the repairs not made we had no water at the house)
How does this fit into the lookback rule?
Started with 80 k in the bank now have 11 k but it's all in my name.
Husband and I have joint account where his SS check and Pension checks are deposited. He now pays 400/month for plan F Medigap

What was the reason that Medicaid gave for the refusal?

Is it because you have to many assets? Make to much money monthly or what?

Have you spoken with a certified elder law attorney (www.nelf.org) to help you qualify? That would be my 1st step.

You don't have to be impoverished for him to qualify for assistance, but you can't own a million dollar property either.

Time to find out what needs to be done to keep both of you safe.

My experience with Medicaid has been as long as you are paying his bills there's no problem. In what you have listed, as long as you have receipts and maybe documentation of required repairs, I don't see any problem except maybe including your funeral expenses (probably not since you are the spouse). You (as the spouse) are allowed 50% of any savings, so I suggest you see an elder care attorney or an Area Agency on Aging social worker as soon as possible. You could have probably retain some funds and already qualified your husband for Medicaid if you had contacted someone sooner.
