My 85 yr old dad has selective hearing we think. If he has the tv remote he will turn the tv up so loud it vibrates cause he says he can’t hear it. He does have new hearing aids 8 months old. If you have the remote you can turn it at a comfortable volume he says he can hear it too. So why does he always turn it so loud?

Just curious, does the family remain quiet while the TV shows are on? I know I have to up the volume because my sig other will start talking about something not related to the show. My Mom did the same thing when I was younger.

My father has a good quality pair of earphones that attach to the TV. He hears his drivel clearly and everyone else doesn’t pack their bags and leave. Look in Walmart in the TV section.

If the remote is near him he automatically will turn it up doesn't matter if there is anyone in the room with him or not. I ( his caregiver/ daughter) am normally the only one around him. A friend of mine said it could be that he hasn't been able to hear for so long that he thinks it is normal to have it up that loud and maybe his aids adjust it down or it just doesn't bother him. We are all confused and don't know how to help him or what to do to get him to stop turning it up so loud. It is really unbearable. I am looking into wireless speakers cause I don't think he could use head phones or would bother with them. Before mom passed last year he never turned it up that loud but then mom was the one that watched the tv he was ok with what ever she wanted.

Hearing aids only help so much. He is probably still trying to improve his hearing even with the hearing aids by adjusting the volume.
This doesn’t pertain to watching tv but is a good reference for things to remember when dealing with anyone hard of hearing.

Does he adjust the volume on his aids or does he just leave them at the minimum volume they are set at when first turned on? He might be able to have the initial volume increased or reset. That initial volume is normally set for "normal" environment and should be adjusted by the wearer for different situations.
