I would like to know why the veterans that served in the Cuban Missile Crisis are being denied veteran benefits? My brother-in-law was on a submarine and was in action during the crisis, he served 4 years total in the Navy! Why would these veterans be treated with less recognition than any other veteran, they served and put their lives on the line for our country! This is a disgrace!

i agree. I don’t understand the workings of the VA, but I thought a Vet was a Vet no matter where they served. As long as they served in the Armed Forces they were considered a Veteran. In your BIL’s case it certainly doesn’t sound fair. Have you spoken with your Congressman?

The Cuban Missile Crisis For thirteen days in October 1962 the world waited—seemingly on the brink of nuclear war. The Navy was there ready for action, my brother-in-law was out in the ocean on a submarine sleeping under torpedo's serving his country... trained and ready for action! He served a total of 4 years and has an honorable discharge. There were thousands of military veterans in Vietnam, Gulf War, and other wars that never went in action. I had another brother-in-law that was stationed in Japan during Vietnam War and never in action but receives full benefits! This is a shame my one brother-in-law has no benefits, he served our country he deserve's help from the VA. he has severe Parkinson's. But the government will support people that have come to our country illegally... a shame!

There is a question on AC “who is eligible for VA benefits? One of the attorneys answers at length. There are certain conflicts that are covered. Cuban Missle Crisis is not listed. Check it out there is a good explanation.

My dad served four years in the Navy during WWII. He was declared eligible for educational benefits and VA loan, but received no medical services. His brother was stationed in Florida (Army) reserve unit called up during Cuba crisis, along with a BIL. They received only the benefit of VA loan - no medical. My dad was told they look at the number of days in various duties and made some determination based on that. I would suggest that he appeal the decision and ask for a complete explanation of the ruling.

The missle crisis lasted 13 days, not a war or conflict. Have you talked to a VA representative. I have two friends who were in Nam for a year (drafted for 2yrs) and both get benefits thru the VA hospital. Both on Medicare.
