Is there a spouse or any dependent children? If so, I think Social Security pays a small death benefit to a surviving spouse or dependent child. Check with Social Security. Also did she ever belong to a labor union or receive a pension. Some unions/ensions have death benefits. Finally, is she receiving Medicaid or any. other public assistance? Maybe there's some coverage for funeral expenses. Ask hospice, social workers, funeral directors, and members of the clergy for advice. Check out every possible source of further assistance.

Check your local medical examiner's office, in Miami-Dade they offer very low cost cremation.

The hospice people should know. Also, check with local government. In my state the county will cremate the remains of the indigent. In some other places the deceased can be buried in a "potter's field", also for the indigent. It is wise of you to be thinking of this ahead of the time it will be necessary. My sympathies to you.

Hospice told me about "Anatomy Gift Registry" the 2nd day mom was under their care. They were very easy to deal with, I'm sure mom would have been pleased. You might want to give them a call, they're Nationwide.

two good suggestions there. some states permit a green burial on your own property. no casket or vault so no big deal for a future tenant. i would like that but my sons are too lazy to dig over a foot deep. i hope to beat the system somehow cause i dont want someone profitting from my death. im a vet, i think the va pays to have you tossed into a swamp. thats good enough for me.

Taralynne, ps tiegman's idea is a good one. One of my co-workers father's body was donated to a med school.... It is something that needs to be arranged ahead of time. Maybe look into it to see if it can happen before you discuss it with sister and nephew? Also I agree to ask hospice too.
