Dementia refers to certain symptoms that indicate cognitive impairment and trouble with daily activities like writing checks, remembering how to do something or exhibiting confusion. Dementia is not normal aging and some dementias can be treated, although most causes of dementia are neurodegenerative diseases. Neurologists use several tools to determine the "stages" of dementia. The MMSE can be used to screen a person for dementia but cannot diagnose the cause of the dementia. The FAST scale is another tool that shows different stages of dementia and what behavior can be exhibited at each stage. Stages 2 and 3 could be considered mild dementia. Knowing the stage, however, does not tell you what the cause of dementia is. On your next dr. visit, ask the dr. what the cause of your husband's dementia is and become educated about it. You can Google "MMSE" and "FAST scale" to read for yourself.
